Words are always important. In this time of fragility and volatility, words are especially important. Of all the labels applied to the scourge that blankets us, religious fascism is most telling and accurate.
Religious fascism is a time honored criminal enterprise
Christianity has been the predominant religion in the USA. So, the thugs have worked long and hard to commandeer the love of Jesus. It’s like the modern version of the Crusades, and it is happening all over the world. One way or another, this is not going to end well for them. Call it Christian nationalism or Christian supremacy, in the end it is raw religious fascism.
Religious fascism is a sin, and the perpetrators are liable for the theft and deprecation of the name of Christ. It is like they are giving a false name (witness) to a cop, and are bound to get caught. They move up to identity theft and identity fraud, assuming to render judgment and skirt justice.
There is nothing Christian about nationalism or fascism
Fascism and nationalism are both political ideologies that prioritize the interests of the nation above all else. Nationalism focuses on promoting a sense of national identity and unity among citizens. Fascism takes this concept further by advocating for a centralized, authoritarian government that suppresses individual freedoms in the name of national strength and unity. Fascism also features violence and protects the rich, just as we now see daily in the USA. Don’t mistake this for The Way of Jesus.
Nationalism can be a positive force for promoting patriotism and national pride. Fascism leads to oppressive and discriminatory policies that prioritize the interests of a select group over the rights of individuals. These ideologies do not have positive connection to love-based Christianity.
Subscribing to “Christian nationalism” is taking the name of God in vain because it falsely claims God’s approval for political goals, and associates God with specific exclusionary and nationalistic ideologies. These are not God’s will, nor are they aligned with God’s will, and to claim such is violation of the Third Commandment.
Christian nationalism is a misnomer; the reality being rolled out is religious fascism
The average person might think she still gets to heaven if she’s a Christian nationalist. But maybe she’s not so sure if she’s labeled a religious fascist. It’s all part of the mirage.
We need to call it for what it is. Stop letting the name of Christ be dragged around. Let us learn not to use His name in such a frivolous, false, and abusive way. It is wrong to misrepresent His will to justify criminal earthly power plays and nationalistic agendas. But since Christian nationalism has so much name recognition, it is accommodated in this definition. Please share your thought about the definition, recalling that words are important. I was able to defend it against a few ardent fascists, but your opinion is important.
The scourge’s definition
Religious fascism: a blending of church and state for purposes of greed and power, sometimes called Christian nationalism to protect the irreligious offenders. A racist-born reliance on the smiteful God of the Old Testament, dismissing the New Testament at their convenience; for example, not welcoming the stranger or, belittling empathy. Religious fascism undermines Christianity using dark tendencies that have always been there, which started ramping up with televangelism in the 1980s, using dominionism and radicalized evangelism until today 2025. Now “Christian nationalism” (religious fascism) flaunts violence in open opposition to the democratic republic, in service to Israeli fascism and autocracy in the homeland.
Religious fascism is just what the framers were worried about
As defined in the Constitution, no religion shall be imposed by the government. But this is central to the dark force assault against Christianity and democracy; it’s how they are gaining and abusing power. True Christians and concerned citizens must stand against religious fascism.
Pray for them all, but especially for the millions who have been duped by religious fascism. Sadly, many well-meaning pastors have been lulled into this tragedy over time.
