He has many accomplices, Minnesota’s instantly infamous Christian nationalist killer. Accomplices helped him carry out the shootings and encouraged him. And now they are protecting him. They range from his immediate family to the POTUS, and all the fascist forces and influences along the way.
Maybe most diabolical of the influences on the Christian nationalist killer is the religious doctrine that shaped him into a deadly chameleon. Weaving hate and fear into hearts and minds, under deviant forms of charismatic and evangelic influence, you arrive at imperatives. Imperatives to pray violently, which means more when promoted in context of dominionism. Of course, the school is dismissive, saying it means to be fervent and helps prepare students for their work. This is tantamount to Senator Mike Lee saying the shooter was a Marxist – this is his sick protection of the wider fascist cause.
The people extend their sorrow for the public service shooting victims and their families. They are remembered and honored by the nation and in our prayers. Melissa and Mark Hortman, John and Yvette Hoffman.
Christian nationalism, plus militarism, plus authoritarianism is fascism
Certainly, the killer was aligned and supportive of the Christian nationalist calls for insurrection and taking out the unhumans, like you. Their handbook is secondary to Christian nationalism in keeping MAGA on task. These points are mentioned given their direct influence on street violence. The real power came down through the Moral Majority and the John Birch Society. Today, power primarily flows through the Heritage Foundation.
So far, the media is not calling him out as a Christian nationalist. What the man is not, even though this is how the media labels him, is a devout Christian. It’s slanderous to call him Christian in any sense. Of course, they would say that determination is between him and God, the smiteful God. This is an example of the treachery developed and deployed within the irreligious Christian nationalist movement. A movement that has subjugated the name of Christ and serves as a voting block for violent extremism. Purposeful vagueness serves them well.
The Christian nationalist killer marks progress for the police state
Remember how Justice Alito was flying the Christian nationalist flag over his house? He might not be glad for the shooting, but he probably considers it right directionally. Politicians are saying they are scared and that the “political” violence needs to stop, meaning don’t shoot them, the politicians (as if that is what finally matters). News flash: everybody is scared and all the violence is political. In the end, the killer is no different than Hegseth’s readiness to take down the blue cities, or the Nazi bikers doing ICE work in Detroit. All POTUS good guys.
POTUS appreciates all the help he can get. So, there was no condolences or help extended. There’s the unhuman for you. The FBI effort was cursory. A stand up man would have handled it differently; might have reconsidered the fascist police state he is building. Basically, POTUS is not going to discourage anything his base does when they are taking out his enemies. This is where we are. So, the pardon option is open for the Christian nationalist killer.
Also, remember the words of the Heritage Foundation president last year: โWe are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless โ if the left allows it to be.โ And, they have guns and the will to use them.
Given the pivotal role Christian nationalism has played in tearing down democracy and the Christian faith, a counter Christian stance is needed, organized in context of a meaningful plan. Maybe now, as the people struggle widely and mightily, Christians will become more committed and visible. That might be the miracle we need. Christians against Christian nationalism is the obvious intercept point, if democracy with freedom of religion is to survive.
For a reminder, what is Christian nationalism?
Christian nationalism is the tribe to which the shooter belonged.
Attorney Andrew Seidel provided the following definition in his write-up for the January 6th insurrection committee. He called it the “biggest threat to America today. An existential threat to a government of the people, for the people, and by the people”.
Christian Nationalism is an identity built on the claim that America was founded as a Christian nation, that it was based on Judeo-Christian principles, and, most importantly, that we have strayed from that foundation, from our godly roots. Christian Nationalism employs the language of return in an effort to claim to be the true heirs of the American experiment and, more importantly, the American Identity. In their retelling, Christian Nationalists are the true Americans, everyone else is an interloper.
